If you’ve ever wondered why some hair extensions stay soft, full and beautiful for months… while others quickly become dry, thin or matte, you’re not imagining it.

The truth is: not all hair extensions are created equally.

It wasn’t until our first visit to China in 2022 that we realised just how unregulated and confusing the hair extension industry can be for brands, salons and customers alike.

Once we discovered that terms like “Russian” and “European” hair were often simply marketing labels for processed Asian hair, we made it our mission to better understand the whole manufacturing process and create a brand focused on transparency, longevity and quality.

So let’s dive into some of the things that actually matter when you’re investing in hair extensions.

1. The Hair Mix

Not all extensions are made using the same type of hair.

You’ll often find a combination of:

  • Remy hair: cuticle aligned, healthier hair designed for longevity

  • Non-Remy hair: mixed-direction hair that can come from brushes, floors or collected waste hair

  • Synthetic fibres : man-made fibres often blended in to reduce costs

Non-Remy hair is commonly acid washed to reduce tangling, then heavily silicone coated to create an artificial silky feel.

The problem?

It may feel soft straight out of the packet… but once that coating fades, the hair underneath is often dry, damaged and prone to matting.

True Remy hair requires more care, time and patience to source and process properly, hence why it's more expensive, but the difference in wear is undeniable.

2. The Silicone Coating Problem

If your extensions feel extremely slippery or overly silky straight out of the packet, that’s not always a good sign.

In many cases, heavy silicone coatings are used to mask damage caused during aggressive bleaching and processing.

Once that coating begins to wash away, especially when paired with keratin or protein-based products, the reality starts to show: dryness, brittleness, tangling and dullness.

At SH, our focus has always been on long-term hair integrity, not temporary softness.

We want your extensions to still feel beautiful months later, not just on day one, which is why we choose to go silicone free. No masking bad hair here.

3. Why Fullness Matters

Some extensions look thick at the top… but thinner, wispy and uneven through the ends.

This often comes down to the quality of hair being used and whether mixed hair types or shorter filler hairs have been added to reduce costs. Poorer quality hair will often snap of shed faster.

At SH, we use double drawn Remy hair designed to maintain a fuller, healthier look from top to bottom.

4. The Speed of Processing

This is one of the biggest differences between premium hair and cheaper alternatives and where many factories take shortcuts.

When raw dark hair is lifted to lighter shades, it goes through a slow colour bath process.

Some factories rush this process in just a few days to reduce production costs.

We take 3 - 7 days, slowly lifting the pigment while helping preserve the integrity of the hair.

Guess which one lasts longer? 😏

A slower, gentler process creates stronger, silkier hair that holds up far better over time.

This is one of the biggest reasons cheaper extensions often become dry, brittle or overly processed after only a few washes.

5. Why We Created our Own Standards

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

A lot of “luxury” hair brands rely on customers not fully understanding how manufacturing works.

Marketing terms and fancy origin stories can sound impressive, but they don’t always reflect the actual quality of the hair. We’re not interested in flashy labels, misleading origin stories or creating products designed to be replaced every few months.

Our goal isn’t to expose anyone.

It’s to educate stylists, empower customers and create more transparency within the industry.

Because informed customers make better investments.

Our mission has always been simple:
to create high quality hair extensions designed for long-term wear, while being transparent about how the industry actually works.

6. Proper Care Still Matters

While our extensions are backed by a 12-month quality guarantee (most brands offer 3-6 by the way!), proper aftercare still plays a huge role in longevity.

Like your natural hair, extensions need hydration, protection and gentle maintenance to perform at their best.

A few of our biggest recommendations:

  • Use extension-safe products (we recommend MUK's range)

  • NO keratin or protein-based products

  • Brush gently from ends to roots

  • Rinse hair after swimming in chlorine or salt water

  • Use fresh water + leave-in conditioner before swimming

  • Avoid heavy oils at the roots

  • Blow dry roots after sweating or exercise

  • Wear loose braids or a low ponytail for sleep and exercise

We hope this helps you make better hair decisions
